Located the country’s eastern region, Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, is its biggest city with around two and a half million people calling it home. It is also the most populated city in Central Asia. Tashkent became the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan when the country became independent in 1991.

Uzbekistan’s long and interesting history can be witnessed in the fascinating architecture of Tashkent. The exhibition halls and metro stations, in particular, are very good examples to look out for. If you want to experience real local life in Tashkent, then you should pay a visit to one of the many local markets, which are thriving social centers for the local inhabitants.

Uzbek cuisine consists mainly of bread and noodles with mutton being a staple part of the diet due to the ubiquity of sheep in the country. Tea is one of the most popular beverages in Uzbekistan and the national hot drink is actually green tea, but black tea is preferred in Tashkent.

Tashkent boasts an excellent public transport system which makes travelling around the city a breeze. The city’s underground network runs from 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. and is an incredibly convenient way to get from A to B.

Tashkent served as an important stop on the Silk Road thanks to its location and climate. Its main tourist sites are Hazrati-Imam Square, in the historical section of the city, The Baraq-Khan Madrassah and Tilla-Shaykh Mosques, the Mausoleum of the famous Islamic scholar Abu Bakr Qaffal Shashi, and The Imam al-Bukhari Islamic Institute. Additionally, the Tashkent Television Tower, at 375 meters high, is the eleventh tallest tower in the world.
