Barcelona is the heart of Catalonia, situated between the clear, warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the Tibiado hills. Barcelona lies right in the middle of areas of interest. To the north are the domineering peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains and the famous wild coat of Costa Brava, while the beautiful Roman city of Tarragona and the coastal Sitges lie to the South. To the west you will find regions famed for their wine growing, or a short boat ride to the east will take you to the Balearic Islands, which combine a stunning natural beauty, with a famous vibrant nightlife. Whichever way you face in this amazing part of the world, you will be one your way to something fascinating.

Some of the world’s most famous architects and artists have been influenced by Barcelona and their legacies can be found all over the city. From the Surrealism of Dali and the Cubist art of Picasso, to the modernist spies of Gaudi’s Cathedral, the natural beauty of the city is matched by its cultural significance.

A wander down the famous Ramblas will take you to the sea, but don’t plan for a quick walk as the length of the street is lined with an array of picturesque churches, grand opera houses, cafes and bars. There are stores and markets to shop until your heart’s content, or just stand in wonder at the antics of the numerous mimes and street artists.

The best collection of Picasso’s art is housed in the Picasso Museum, a short walk away from a beautiful cathedral, which is the focal point of the legendary Gothic Quarter.

If you still have the energy, Barcelona really changes at night. The city’s nightlife is famous, justifiably so. Dinner is served late, usually after 9pm and after this you can visit on of the city’s bars, cafés or clubs, which seem to be everywhere. For those still not worn out by the huge choice of nightspots available, you can choose to extend your night until the early morning in the open-air night clubs of the Tibidabo Hills, or other clubs, which tailor to every individual taste.

Whether you want the history and culture of Barcelona’s heart, it’s amazing natural landscape, or its lively nightlife, Barcelona is a fantastic place to combine your TESOL course, with a travel experience you will never forget.
