This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have thought about studying for my TEFL for a number of years now and I am glad that I am half way through. I still have the teaching component left which I hope to take in January.
I have realized that I still do have a brain and that I can be disciplined enough to study alone reaching the personal time frames and goals I have set myself.
Studying the grammar units has made me think a great deal about the process of learning I went through at school (as lots of it I had forgotten), but I guess, as a native english speaker you are constantly exposed to the language so just pick it up as you are growing up. It is interesting for me to learn how most of the time I am able to hear what sounds correct or incorrect, and correct where necessary, or look at writing and see where the mistakes are and correct them ,but unaware of why the mistakes have been made and the grammar behind it. This I realize will take time and practice!
The more practical side of the units (teaching methods) have helped me assess the way I currently teach, giving me new ideas and a fresh approach as well as assessing the way I plan and structure my classes.
I hope that I will possibly get a chance to shadow a young learner english teacher for a while, particularly with the grammar, as that is where my teaching focus lies. I then hope that I can gain working experience somewhere abroad for a while and teach young children.
Once I have completed this course I plan to take the young learners certificate.
