Going through this course taught me a lot about myself and showed me that, in spite of the inadequacies I feel I may have to be an ESL teacher, this task is not impossible and I can be equipped to tackle this job. I started this course without any other prior TEFL training so I know that this course has pointed me in the right direction as well as provided me with some helpful tools and materials that I will be able to use in my future teaching career. I feel like I have a better understanding of how an ESL class is supposed to function and run. I really appreciated working through the lesson plans to practice putting together a workable lesson for the different levels of students. Thinking through these really helped me take what I had been studying and apply it to the classroom situation. Reading and working through the grammar lessons helped me not only review my own grammar but also gave me some ideas of how to teach it in this specific context. I’ve realized that it is one thing to teach grammar to a group of english speaking students but to try to explain it to students who are used to the grammar in their own language offers unique challenges. Thinking through these challenges and seeing how to overcome them with real workable solutions has been very encouraging. I know I will continue to do more research and learning during my time as a teacher but I feel this course has given me a jumping off point from which I can guide the students under my care. It also has provided me with many resources to help add variety to my classes and to help me be a better teacher.
