This course has deepened my understanding of english grammar, given me various considerations regarding students, and has shown me an organized context in which to present and teach english to various levels of learners. The grammar section of this course was not only a refresher for the past, present, and future tenses, but gave me a greater understanding of them than I had before. The explanations, examples, and general format were very helpful in assisting me to better understand not only the construction of the tenses themselves, but also in how to present it to english learners. A thorough understanding of the subject matter is necessary for any english teacher to be successful, and the grammar lessons from this course have helped give me that. Furthermore, the grammar lessons have given me some good baseline ideas on what difficulties to expect, and how to present the material in an effective manner. I have already begun to put these lessons to use in the classroom. In the future, I'll incorporate the grammatical formulas and tips for common student errors, as well as the examples for their proper use when planning lessons. Aside from simply a grammar lesson, this course has also given me greater insight into many student considerations. From making sure to keep activities varied for young learners to really focusing in on the specific needs of experienced english students in the business world, I have been exposed to many common or potential needs that they may have to get the most out of a lesson. From this course, as well as my own experience as a language student, I have gained greater empathy for the struggles, concerns, and motivations of various groups of students. When planning and conducting future classes, I'll be sure to heed much of the advice of this course when tailoring the classes to the students' needs. Probably the most helpful bit I've gained from this course is the ESA lesson planning structure. Having such an outline to structure future lessons has already helped in my classes. Though I am currently somewhat limited in my lesson planning flexibility, I have found the Engage and Activate sections particularly helpful when interacting with students and getting them to understand and use the language. In the future I hope to take the ESA structure and build interesting and effective lesson plans that will help me conduct successful and entertaining classes for my students.
