I am not a native english speaker, even though english has been my working language for many years. I learned a lot on grammar and I pay much more attention to the way I speak and write than before. I would say it’s a more unconscious process but there is definitely a big difference. It is always good to know why certain words or phrases are written the way they are, one knows how it’s written but not necessarily why. The second part of knowledge I gained was on teaching techniques; TEFL has a whole different approach to teaching than what I am used to in belgium. We were thought things the old fashioned way: grammar, vocabulary, exercise’s and study. Language classes were never fun, we has rarely activities in groups. By doing this course, I got to understand that language can be thought in a fun way and at the same time be very productive. Previously I did some voluntary teaching, mainly based on the course book of the students and the materials provided by the school, following this course gave me many ideas on how to teach things better in a more efficient way for the students and less bring for the teachers as well.
