The same lesson being taught twice to groups of Thai students of English. One lesson is being taught effectively, while in the other lesson the same teacher is deliberately making a number of basic errors. LESSON ONE The teacher walks in and does not introduce himself, nor does he ask the learners what their names are. This makes individual attention difficult. The teacher is not prepared properly. The board is clean and he goes straight into the lesson. No clear demonstration is given or any context outline for the purpose of the activities. Learners are therefore confused, nervous and unwilling to respond or answer when questioned as they are unaware of what is expected of them. The teacher corrects them during the lesson instead of correcting them at the end. He does not follow teaching principles or factors that need to be taken into consideration when setting up and managing a class. LESSON TWO The teacher arrives and he introduces himself to the learners, and asks them what their names are and he is friendly. This establishes good rapport between the teacher and the learners. He addresses them by name when asking for answers or feedback. It inspires the learners to be confident. He uses his eye contact, gestures and voice correctly and this puts the learners at ease, making it easier to follow and understand the lesson. Good attitude of a teacher will have a profound effect on the success of the lesson.
