There are twelve tenses in English and it constantly makes learners very confused. Nevertheless, this rather challenging part of grammar is absolutely vital and cannot be studied superficially. This unit introduces the four Present tenses. The Present Simple is used for habitual or routine actions, general information and facts, giving directions and instructions, newspaper headlines, present stories and historical events. We use the Present Continuous Tense for actions happening at the present moment, temporary actions, very frequent actions, background actions in a present story, changing or developing situations, regular actions around a point of time. However, these rules cannot be applied to most verbs of state making this tense tricky for both students and teachers. Present Perfect. This is the most ambiguous tense in terms of its usage for low- and even intermediate level students because it is often confounded with Past tenses. Teachers should pay a lot of attention to this issue and study this question in detail. Moreover, the Present Perfect is very commonly used by native speakers in their everyday communication. The Present Perfect Continuous tense puts emphasis on the action but not on its result and is not used with verbs of state.
