In this unit, the basic parts of speech were explained and examples were given representing each part. The basic structure of a sentence begins with a subject (usually a noun), contains a verb (the action word) and an object (another noun, either indirect or direct). The types of nouns were broken down into countable, uncountable, common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective. Nouns can be defined as people, places, things, animals, qualities or states of being. Adjectives are the words that describe nouns. Articles are either definite, referring to something specific or indefinite, referring to something general and they come before nouns. Verbs can either be action verbs or states, transitive (followed by object) or intransitive (stands alone). To conjugate regular verbs, just add "ed" to the base form of the verb to form the past simple and the past participle and add "ing" to the base in order to form the present participle. Adverbs are the words that describe the verbs and usually end with "ly". Pronouns are words that can be used instead of nouns and can be personal (I, me, etc.), possessive (his, her, etc.), reflexive (yourself, myself, etc.), relative (who, which, that, etc.). Prepositions show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and some other word in the sentence (at, on, before, above, etc.). Conjunctions join two words in a sentence (and, but, or, etc.).
