This unit went over potential "special groups" a teacher might encounter. The unit identified four special groups: beginners, individual students, children, and Business English/English for a Specific purpose. The unit reviewed the characteristics of each group and identified special challenges and advantages specific to each. For example, because children are very responsive to reinforcement and have short attention spans, language lessons for them should make use of short, engaging activities with room for lots of positive feedback. In contrast, Business English students will be much more collaborative in designing the objectives of a given lesson and range much more widely in motivation and background. This unit is consistent with the idea of student-centered teaching that I understand as the most effective approach from information presented in previous units (for example, the video unit).
