Unit 20 tells us about Troubleshooting and the ways teachers can deal with common problems that happens in the classroom environment. It is very important for teachers to establish rapport with the students and set the tone for the rest of the course when they do their first lesson. The classes can either be a new group of students or an existing group. In the first lesson, the teacher usually does the following: • Establish rapport between new group of students and also between the teacher and the class. • Find out about the students interest. • Find out about the students English needs. • Find out the English level of each student The teacher use questionnaires, needs analysis and other activities such as ‘Tell us about’ and ‘Pass the ball’ to find out this kind of information. Warmer is an important method used to get students motivated to learn in the beginning of a lesson. Some warmer activities are hangman, Pictionary, tongue twisters etc. Having different levels of students in a class is another problem a teacher may face. Some of the things a teacher can do to deal with this are: • Use different materials – the teacher can split the class into stronger and weaker groups and give different materials to the group based on their language ability. • Same material but different tasks. • The teacher does nothing and teaches the same materials to all levels in the class. • Pair stronger students with the weaker ones
