This unit involved conditionals as well as reported speech. Conditionals are sentences that involve "if" and refer to past, present or future possibilities. The "if" phrase represents the condition that needs to be met for the other part of the sentence to be realized (i.e., the consequence is conditional upon the "if" phrase or circumstance being satisfied). There are zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditionals; each used in a specific situation and with a specific, attendant grammatical structure. Understanding these different structures required me to refresh my understanding of the different present, past and future tenses reviewed in previous units. The unit also went over direct and reported speech. Actual speech is considered direct speech. When a person reports direct speech to another listener, the person is using reported speech (essentially reporting on what was said). This also built upon the different tenses taught in previous units and required a conversion of the tense of a verb from direct speech into a different tense in reported speech (with the exception of past perfect and past perfect continuous).
