Having attended college for many years, I have gained greater appreciation for the difficulty in learning english through the inconsistency and sheer volume of rules that mastery requires. I learned english through emulation of other writing styles and through a daily discipline of writing and reading. However, before this course I did not understand the finer points of sentence structure and the rule that mandates a sentence be written in a specific way.
There has been some benefit professionally through this course, particularly through the study of active and passive voice. Writing professional reports, I was consistently told that I had to use an active voice without having any concept of how to form it – except by chance. This course has also provided some ability to brain storm exercises for future classes that otherwise may not have been considered. As direct application, this will likely translate to a smoother transition when/if I do pursue teaching abroad.
