In Unit 4 for this course, I learned all about materials. I read about the difference between authentic and non-authentic materials including examples and the advantages and disadvantages of each. I frequently use both types in my teaching but after reading more about the advantages of authentic materials I intend to increase the amount and quality I currently use and make my non-authentic materials as realistic and applicable as possible. The design of original material is covered in the next section. There is a lot of excellent advice in this section! I found the list of points to keep in mind during the creation process to be very useful, such as the instruction to consider the stage at which the material will be introduced. I admit that I usually create material considering the level and target language skill but without fully reflecting on all points. I believe this advice will be indispensable as I create courses for my existing and future students. Additional points I studied previously but needed a reminder on were to demonstrate activities rather than explain them and to check for understanding with content questions. These are things I will write under the "Aims for the teacher" section of my future lesson plans. Effective lesson planning is the topic of the next section of Unit 4. I appreciate the blank lesson plan that is provided and the chance to practice writing lesson plans including all the aspects covered in this section. I will certainly use them in my teaching. Finally, resources were discussed. I have limited experience with business English textbooks and usually obtain materials from the internet so I'm glad this topic was covered. The webliography included in this unit is much appreciated! I was previously familiar with only one (onestopenglish.com) and am excited to explore and add more free sites to my personal list of resources. In conclusion, Unit 4 has been the most useful so far and has allowed me to reflect on areas of my teaching that I need to improve. I believe the materials business English teachers use, and how we use them, is so important to the quality and success of our lessons. I'm excited to go forward with the knowledge gained from this unit.
