In this lesson, I learned about course books and lesson materials, authentic materials, and created materials. I learned authentic materials are more interesting and motivating because they deal more with real-life situations. Students gain confidence when they understand them, and they can be geared to the interests of a particular group of students.
Created materials are usually designed by the teacher to replace or to supplement materials from a course book. Unlike authentic materials, they can be graded to the level of the students. Course books usually consist of a student’s book, workbook, an audio, teacher’s book, and video and other published materials. I learned about the advantages and disadvantages of using a course book, like how it is normally tried and tested before publication, but how it does not always fit the specific needs and interest of all the class members.
This unit showed me how to make better use of the course books, like not using the course book for the whole lesson, and how not to base all lessons around it.
