Past tenses describes a past event or a state of being. For example I went to the river. There are 4 types of past tenses namely: simple past tense, past perfect, past continuous and past perfect continuous. Simple past tense is used to describe an activity that started in the past and ended in the past e.g I went. Past continuous tense is used to describe an on-going activity in the past e.g I was going. Past perfect tense is used when an action was completed before another took place. The past perfect tense is used to show when an on-going action in the past has ended.
