The choice and use of course books is a complex decision and often debated topic. A balanced approach – use of an appropriate course book (tried and tested syllabus) with a variety of custom materials can prove effective and efficient. Often a teacher may not have a say in the choice of course book, and may find the book and associated materials lacking for the specific needs of a student group. This unit highlighted how important it is to understand the strengths and weaknesses of any prescribed course materials, and to be prepared to adapt, supplement, replace and even leave out various elements. I personally appreciate the opportunity to make the course more tailored, more relevant and therefore more enjoyable with adaption to standard material, although I understand a new EFL teacher will have need to invest significant time in lesson preparation where as a more experience teacher will likelyfind this task easier and less time-consuming.
