In this unit, I learned a lot about how to communicate effectively with students who are learning English as a foreign/second language. It is important to remember to speak at a lower level when giving instructions. It was helpful to know the steps we (as educators) can take to ensure students have understood the instructions (i.e. using gestures, checking for comprehension, avoiding jargon). I think I will be able to do this effectively because in Professional Writing, we learn to avoid jargon because the general masses will most likely not understand academic jargon. Although, I do think I might struggle because what we might consider lower-level in the United States, might not be so in a foreign country. I also learned about the different seating arrangements in classrooms. I actually always use the horse method at George Mason University because our classes are small for ESL and I find it easy to get students to participate when they are arranged in that way. As this lesson has explained, it allows students to feel more comfortable which is something I had not thought about. Lastly, I think what is most important for me to understand is how to establish rapport with students. I find this hard because many different schools/universities require professors to act in a certain way. I find that I am very friendly and it always works with me in the past. I feel as though I do not cross the line to being my student's friends. However, in the COMM department at GMU, one of my supervisors found that I was too friendly with my students and that I was not establishing dominance, while my other supervisor (her co-worker) disagreed with her. I found that since I was jumping from being nice to my students to being very more strict, confused a lot of my students and some did not like me. I think this chapter was very useful because it made me feel as though I was not wrong for smiling a lot (because really, that is all that I did!), and lets me know how to continue from now on.
