Teachers are commonly faced with meeting a number of classes for the first time and teach them the first lessons of the course. In first lessons, experienced teachers will use activities to achieve the following: establish rapport between the students themselves, establish rapport between the students and the teacher, find out about the student' interests, find out about the students' needs/aspirations with English, and find out the English level of each class member. Knowing this information will help teachers gear lessons toward the needs and interests of the class. Warmers are short, fun, communicative activities used at the beginning of a lesson to get students motivated and speaking English. Some warmer activities include: hang man, pictionary, tongue twisters, and memory games. Teachers may find they are faced with a group where students are at various levels of English. There are a number of ways a teacher can deal with this including: use different materials for different levels of students, use the same materials but more complicated tasks for stronger students, do nothing but let the students find their own level within the class, and pair stronger students with weaker students. Teachers may find themselves having to teach a large class. teachers can employ a number of techniques to create a successful class including: use of worksheets, pair/group work, clarity, choral repetition, appoint group leaders, and class dynamics. Students' use of their native tongue can become a problem in classes, especially in monolingual ones. There are a number of things a teacher can do in this situation including: make sure activities are at an appropriate level with the students where they have the language to cope, make sure explanations are clear to all class members, encourage the use of English where appropriate without a total ban of native language, only respond to English being spoken and not native language, and constantly remind the students to use English. Teachers will sometimes come across students who are reluctant to talk or participate in class. There are some useful ideas to deal with this including: use plenty of pair work, use controlled practice before expecting them to produce language fluently, use role-play, and use a tape recorder so students can express themselves in a less threatening atmosphere. Students often have difficulty with listening texts. Teachers should make sure the quality of the audio is good and all students can hear it. Some students will be faster at finishing activities than others, so it is good for teachers to provide them with extra material, such as word searches, so the don't get bored. I learned a lot from this unit and this EFL course overall. I hope to get an EFL certificate and find a job teaching EFL on a part time basis and perhaps full time in the future. I am currently learning the Spanish language and am interested in teaching English to Spanish students in South America someday. I think this course is very effective, professionally done, and I highly recommend ITTT to anyone who wants to learn TEFL. I'm very happy I took this course, I learned a lot from it, and hope to use it to get a TEFL job in the near future. Thank you so much for your helping me with guidance on how to become an effective TEFL teacher.
