This unit provided an example of an ineffective and effective language lesson in action. From these videos, it is obvious that the teacher's attitude has a profound effect on the success of the lesson. In the first video, the teacher seemed antagonistic and condescending. He did not attempt to engage the students on a personal level or do anything to make the learning material engaging or even accessible. In stark contrast, the teacher in the second video began the lesson by making a point to learn everyone's name, setting the tone for a student-centered class. The teacher was upbeat and encouraging, doing things such as speaking slowly and clearly, providing additional examples for clarity, and miming and making facial expressions to communicate a point. The class in the second video was more fun and, in large part because of the tone the teacher established, more effective, encouraging participation. The difference between the two videos highlights the importance of having an upbeat, student-focused attitude when approaching a lesson plan and execution.
