This module covered the importance of reading and listening skills. It states that we read for predictive, scanning and skimming functions, to search for detailed information and that we are able to deduce meaning from context. Students may find listening activities more challenging as the text is not 'capture' and can only be heard and not seen where the learner has time to think on the meaning. Teachers should be sure to pre-teach difficult vocabulary and be careful to select texts that suit the level at which the class is at. Topics should be chosen to suit the needs of the selected group and suitable tasks need to be created. Authentic texts would be used only for much more advanced learners whereas beginners would benefit more from a text that has been edited to suit their needs.
