I've learned that both reading and listening are valuable when learning a new language because without one, the other becomes difficult to navigate. If you only read in another language, you would not be able to pick up on conversations in real time, and if you only listened, you would not be able to gather information as effectively. Each skill gives us the ability to further our understanding of a language, including cultural insight. Without it, we would not be able to function as well within a different society because we would not pick up on traditions, norms, unspoken rules, etc. It is very important that we as teachers try our best to engrain both reading and listening skills within our students because they will be all the better for it.
