This unit has learned me that the four things a student needs to do to learn a new language are; exposure, understanding its meaning and construction as well as how to practice and produce it. When teaching grammatical structures it is important to it is important to teach students the meaning of words, the uses and different forms and patterns that they might come across in different situations, be it formal or informal conversations. This is also where teaching language functions with the help of boomerang and patchwork lessons become beneficial to both the students range of vocabulary and the differences in grammar and appropriateness. When teaching vocabulary it is important to point out similarity to own language (if any), similarity to English words that they already know, spelling and pronunciation and the appropriate use thereof. The use of a straight arrow ESA approach with lower level students is beneficial for its simplicity but a patchwork lesson might be more suited for higher level students. In conclusion teaching a new language relies heavily on the study phase of the ESA lesson plan and should as far as possible be specifically focused on one area. Lessons in grammar and vocabulary usually make use of the straight arrow technique where as teaching functions makes use of patchwork lessons, a good teacher must know the most effective structure to follow for the appropriate level of student and objective of study.
