I have learnt from this unit that evaluating students is a necessary activity to do at different stages of an English course. It helps the teacher to know where the students are on the ladder of English language levels, and understand how the students respond or react to what/how they have been taught in the class, what they need to improve, then create a suitable plan for the future lessons to tend to the students' needs. There are a number of ways to assess a student's language level: 1. Tutorials: the teacher can spend some time, with the whole group or with individual students, at the end of the week reviewing the work done, discussing the aims of the lessons, how well the students performed the tasks, whether there are any problems, etc. 2. Evaluation by students' feedback: the teacher ask the students to evaluate their course through a questionnaire or guided discussion. The results of the survey can then be discussed and future lessons considered in the light of students' comments. 3. Tests at various stages of the course: - Placement tests (before commencing a course) enable the teacher to place new students into the class according to their language ability. - Diagnostic tests (at the beginning of the course) are to find out what the students already know, and to help the teacher to prepare lessons and materials that will enable students to work on the areas of difficulty identified by the test. - Progress tests (used periodically during the course) are to gauge what language has been acquired and what language has been forgotten. - Practice tests (before an external examination) help students to get some idea of how close they are to the required standard, also to get used to the structure of the examination they are preparing for. - Achievement tests (at the end of a course). Beside the listed tests, there are external tests or proficiency tests designed to meet the need of English language learners who want to study or work in English speaking countries, who have moved to Britain from other countries, or who are learning English in preparation for a career in business. The most common tests in this category are: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, BEC, BULATS, ESOL Skills for Life.
