Looking back at the time before I started the course, I always thought teaching a language would be no problem as long as you knew the tongue. I found it quite easy, and since I never saw my language teacher struggling with lessons or not having something for us to do, I thought it came naturally. I was expecting this course to be a piece of cake, but it actually wasn’t. Teaching english, even if I know english almost perfectly, is hard. There are a lot of things you need to think about. And what seems like something natural to us, it’s not natural to others. Breaking down every part of a sentence, learning why we use the words we do when speaking in the future, past or present tense, it was a lot. I remember my french teacher using the same methods, although not exact, to teach us french as there are here. Seeing learning from a point of view of a student, and now as a teacher, has really opened up my mind. My ideas of teaching have changed drastically. Before I just thought of having students learn phrases and go from there. Now I know it’s not as simple as that. We must explain grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and so on. I feel like I can start off somewhere. I have a base now rather than just beginning at some random point. I plan on using my certificate to teach others while I am in school. Although I plan on volunteering first to get some experience, I would eventually want a job so I can help pay my tuition. Also, the idea of making a difference in someone’s life, as students and teachers often do with one another, sounds like a very good experience to me. I hope that with the experience I gain from teaching here, I can have the same impact and help others from different cultures learn the beauty of the english language.
