Conditionals and reported speech are important English grammar elements. The changing of the speaker and the verb tense is crucial. Let us take a quick look at these elements. Conditionals, as the name states, deal with certain conditions that use two different types of clauses; an “if” clause and a main clause, which satisfies the “if” clause. There are five different conditionals to consider. 1. The zero conditional is usually an “if” clause that is a fact or an action that happens. You can also replace the word “if” with “when”. For example, “if the temperature is below 32°F, the water in the bucket will freeze.” 2. The first conditional is based on a real situation in the future that is possible and both clauses are written in present simple plus 'will'. For example: “If I go to the store at 6 PM, it will be busy.” 3. The second conditional is based upon a hypothetical situation and it’s written in past simple plus would/could/might plus the base verb. For example, “if I lived in 1957, I would have purchased a new 57 Chevy.“ 4.The third conditional is something that could happen but is hypothetical of a past consequence. This conditional is usually written as 'if' plus past perfect plus would plus have plus past participle. For example “if she would have seen the technology today, she would have been amazed.” 5. The final conditional is the mixed conditional. It is a variation of the second and third conditional. For example, “if I sang like that, I would have been famous by now.“ Just as conditionals rely on verb tense and structure forms, reported speech also considers these ideals. There are two forms of speech; reported and direct. Direct speech is a direct quote from a person, where as reported speech is indirect and is usually referring to something in the past . In reported (indirect) speech, you must consider different wordings and verb tenses in reference to the past. As well, you must watch for the proper pronoun changes. As can be seen, conditionals and reported speech can be difficult to work with. However, if you spend adequate time in understanding and watching grammar and structure, the teacher will be able to help their students have a stronger foundation and appreciation for the complex English language.
