The two productive skills are speaking and writing, and while both are equally important, writing can be more of a challenge for English language students as accuracy is typically more important and errors are not immediately fixable like with spoken communication. To practice their productive skills, my students will need to do both accuracy activities and fluency activities. Accuracy activities are more controlled by the teacher because they emphasize on using the target language correctly whereas fluency activities allow for more freedom and creativity for the students to practice effectively communicating as much as they can. Accuracy can be practiced with the use of drilling activities and guided role-play and fluency can be practiced with more creative activities like debates and jigsaw games. Students may find it difficult to practice speaking English for many reasons such as lack of confidence or interest in the topic, so as the teacher I should try to understand my students so I can pick interesting topics for them to discuss and write about and I should be supportive and encouraging as I am mindful of their insecurities.
