Phonology is the study, science and classification of sounds. Intonation refers to the rise and fall of words in a sentence. Intonation indicates the meaning of a sentence. It is crucial in asking questions, agreeing or disagreeing or making a statement. It also expresses emotions such as feelings of happiness, sadness shock, uncertainty. Intonation falls when you want to conclude what you are saying. The following techniques can be used to teach intonation: 1. Gesture 2. Singing 3. Nonsense words 4. Making marks on the board Stress in phonology refers to the words that bears the principal emphasis in a sentence. We can only stress syllables not individual vowels or consonants.for some words, the stress differs according to where the native speaker is from. Pronouns are usually undressed. There are four ways in which words are joined in English: 1. Linking 2. Sound dropping 3. Sound changing 4. Extra lettering Pronunciation in English is crucial. The dictionary is useful in helping with pronunciation as well as telling the meaning of a word. Techniques for teaching English are: 1. Peer dictation- this is where students read and speak for students to write down what they are saying. 2. Use of your own mouth by placing emphasis on individual parts of a word 3. Use of visuals 4. Phonemes 5. Tongue twisters. There is no specific time in the lesson when to teach pronunciation. This differs based on the teacher and the needs of the class. A teacher can decide to introduce it throughout the entire lesson, certain parts of the lesson or when the need arises.
