Unit 11 is about teaching of receptive skills and methods and problems that may teacher face. Reading and listening are equally important. Thus all these skills should be integrated to the structure of the lesson. There can be found different specialist skills for reading and listening. We can use our eyes and ears, but most importantly, our minds. There is a lot of pre-existing knowledge of the world that goes into our receptive skills. Sometimes it is necessary to be able to absorb the general idea, where we listen or read from a text and can understand the general meaning of the text without paying attention to every word. Furthermore, we looking for specific information, focusing on something specific rather than its general content. We must also be able to gather detailed information, or information that demands close attention. Without all the details, the information would be useless. We must be able to extract from context certain meanings, or have critical thinking abilities. Most important is that predictive skills allow you to predict the idea of the text. Alongside with the specialist skills close attention should be paid to the receptive skills teaching issues. The following issues can be outlined, they are: language, topics, creation of interest, tasks. As far as the topic determines the engagement level of the students. If the topic is interesting, or attention grabbing, it will likely serve as a motivator to the students. They will be encouraged to continue in the lesson and participate actively and passively. If there is no interest in the topic, there is little motivator to pay attention, participate and learn. A teacher can generate interest through visual aids such as pictures, songs, games, discussions. Students need to be aware of the language level. The teacher must focus on something that is not too easy but not too difficult. The text must contain what they know, rather than what they don’t know. Specifically for foreign students, there are ESL “non-authentic” books, and “authentic” books created for native English speakers. The students must be able to differ between them. Materials should be chosen carefully according to students level. This unit is great! Thank you ITTT!
