I learned pronunciation and phonology is important to the English learner. Phonology is defined as study, science exploration, and categorization of the physicality of sound. The terms phonetic and phonology are used exchangeable. Intonation includes using stress and techniques of indicating stress. I understand intonation is to be considered the difference in volume and pitch in a whole sentence, whereas stress is more influenced with individual words. This carries a message in a sentence, it is necessary in understanding agreeing or disagreeing or authorizing statements, and is an appearance of emotions or sense. The techniques for indicating and teaching intonation nonsense words, by gesture, humming or singing, the board. Stress is defined as the emphasis in a sentence, and is broken into two rules: (1) one word has only one stress and cannot have a couple of stresses; (2) only stress syllables, not individual vowels or constants. For example, “china” there is stress on “ch” and not the other syllables. There is stress on first syllable. I understand indicating stress and teaching stress through contrastive stress, gesture, vocal work, the board, and stress marks. Constrastive stress is defined as saying a sound that is voiced on placing it together with a sound that is non-voiced. Gestures focus on clapping, clicking fingers, and tapping. The vocal work is defined as chanting or singing beats. Also, stress can be indicated to the student through writing on the board and underlining.
