This unit examines the basic characteristics and responsibilities of good teachers and learners. It details a number of roles that teachers have to take on in the classroom, such as that of controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, tutor, facilitator, participant, model, and monitor. It defines some differences between young learners and adults. It also teaches that the most commonly used levels of English language fluency are Beginners, Elementary, Low/pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced, which broadly equate to those established by the Council of Europe, namely: Breakthrough, Waystage, Threshold, Vantage, Effective Operational Proficiency, and Mastery. I learned that a successful teacher must take care to employ the right role for each classroom activity and endeavor to be patient, kind, sensitive, entertaining, and fair in their dealings with the students.
