I learned that a teacher’s attitude will influence the effectiveness of a lesson greatly. It sets the students at ease and encourages participation. Having a weak rapport with your students may leave them unwilling to participate. If you seem overly dismissive, critical, and unclear in your explanations and instructions, your activities will not be effective. Thus the teacher should always be positive and engaging. They should give a clear explanation of the lesson point so that students do not find the goal of the lesson confusing or elusive. The engage stage is imperative for setting the mood for the rest of the class. It does not only serve as a warming up activity, but introduces the main focus of the class. So do not start teaching immediately, but engage and elicit. When students become confused, a teacher should not ask even more questions. This will cause further confusion. It is also important that a teacher does not focus on fixing grammatical mistakes during the engage phase. The engage phase is considered a warmer and it is best to focus the teaching in the study phase. To build better rapport with your students it is good to be in class before they are and already have all your materials organised. You should also know your students’ names and include all of them in the activities. It is imperative to speak slower and clearly, seeing as English is not your students’ first language. Worksheets and activities need to be explained before it is given to students. This is best achieved by eliciting a correct answer from the worksheet that will be given so that students have an example to follow from. If students do not receive a clear demonstration or any context, it could be difficult for them to figure out what is expected of them. The teacher should also include teamwork, because it allows students to speak to each other, using the target language.
