For effective teaching and learning to take place, there are various methodologies which can be adopted as we have different types of learners. Here so, the teacher needs to take cognizance of these methods to fit-in in every individual difference. This unit has been able to explain some of the methods the teacher can make use of in teaching various types of learners which include: Grammar-Translation, Audio Lingualism, Presentation, Practice and Production, Task-based learning, Communication language teaching, the silent way, the lexical approach etc. The best of the methods could be difficult to decide as we have individual difference among learners. The E.S.A method: The aforementioned methodology can be put into practice using the ENGAGE, STUDY, and ACTIVATE which is most effective in every classroom settings. Engage: The teacher engages the student in the learning activities. The students’ interest is aroused here using games, music e.tc. Every effective form of teaching and learning should start with Engage. Study: The student are made to study the language and its uses, how it is constructed and its pronunciation. Study usually starts with elicitation. Activate: Here, the student is made to put what they have studied into practice. The student will have to speak with the language so as to determine the mastery and fluency level. In a classroom setting, the E.S.A method could be in a Straight-Arrow Pattern, Boomerang or Patch-work depending on what the teacher is teaching. The unit also explains some ideas that could be used in Engage, Study and the Activate phase which are: Engage Phase: Playing memory games, word linking, alphabet relay, anagrams, information search, fizz-buzz, I spy, etc. Study Phase: Elicitation, Pronunciation, Spelling, Meaning, Word Order, Analysis etc. Activate Phase: Role play, Surveys, and Mill-drills, Producing materials, Communication games, Debate/Discussion, Story building. In terms of correction and giving feedback, the teacher should take cognizance of how to correct errors and give feedback to the learners in other to make them lose interest in learning the language.
