I never realized how much goes into present tense. Before this unit, when I thought of present tense, I only thought of 'I am' statements. It's amazing to me how I followed all of these rules without realizing it. I could just tell what was wrong with sentences before the unit, but now I know why they seemed wrong to me. I think it's interesting that it all goes back to the verbs. I must admit I was rather confused until I looked at the affirmative, negative, and question forms of each of the four tenses. I noticed present simple has to do with the verb 'to do.' Present continuous uses the verb 'to be.' Present perfect uses the verb 'to have' and present perfect continuous uses the verb 'to have + been.' Relating each tense to each other helped me understand the tenses as separate entities. I am still slightly confused on how to explain/teach these ideas to students. I obviously can't explain what I just learned since I barely understand it myself, but I do see how some of the sample activate ideas could be really beneficial in creating sentences based on these present tenses. Students need to practice using these tenses over and over and will eventually get it. I don't remember learning all of these rules since English is my first language, but I did absorb the information like my future students will.
