Unit 9 covers the issue that I have been most worried about in regards to becoming an English teacher. I am starting to feel like I understand the material, grammar, and concepts that I will be teaching, but I am more concerned with HOW I will address the topics in class. It is one thing to have the knowledge, but conveying that knowledge and keeping students engaged and making sure they are progressing is necessary to be a successful teacher. This unit gave me some peace of mind because, before the reading, I had this feeling that I would have to plan out every single second and plan what I was going to say. After reading the chapter, I have calmed down and I realize that a lesson plan does not have to be a rigid, calculated schedule to keep to. I feel more relaxed about creating a lesson plan because it is really just the framework for the class that day, and the students will guide us through it. It is still necessary for us to set goals to keep track of progress, but I think the learning can take place organically if our lesson plans are structured in a way that keeps students interested by doing activities that relate to their interests, and then incorporating the learning objectives along the way.
