This unit focused on the course materials an EFL teacher might use, including course books, supplementary materials like cassettes and teacher guides, and workbooks. It divided course materials into two types, authentic and created, and analyzed the benefits and disadvantages of both types. Authentic materials are those encountered by native speakers of the language in day to day life, such as a menu to a restaurant. These are likely to be more topical and interesting to students and help build their confidence when they can understand them. Created materials are those the teacher makes, such as a crossword puzzle, which helps ensure that the materials match the level of the students but may be less interesting to the students. Finally, the unit went over how to evaluate whether a course book matches your students' needs and advised teachers to supplement and adapt the course book when necessary.
