Unit 2 discusses theories about learning and development, how languages are learned, and the best environments for students to learn. There are many development and learning theories. The maturation theory says that there is a natural sequence of events for development and that environment will not affect it. The environmental theory says our behavior is related to surroundings. Constructivism combines the two. The unit discusses native language and second language acquisition. Some findings from research on this include: language learning is not linear, and the easier parts aren't learned first; language is learned through use; young learners do not consciously learn language as quickly as adults. The unit covers different classroom arrangements to encourage full class interaction. Finally, maturation is discussed in the context of the differences in learning a language between younger and older children. Younger kids tend to have shorter attention spans, don't like to be quiet, sit still, or listen to instructions, and prefer more movement, singing, drawing, and "doing" activities. Older kids dislike structure, things that may embarrass them (i.e. presentations/singing), and prefer learning by talking to peers, discussing tv/movies/music, computers, social media, etc.
