In this unit, the respective roles of 'teacher' and 'student' were examined as well as the expectations of each. A good teacher is one with a desire to teach, a level of creativity in order to engage students, patience, kindness, cultural competency and the ability to assess/motivate their students on an individual as well as a group level. A good student is one who is motivated to learn the material, effectively receives feedback from the teacher, asks questions and has the ability to self-assess. In a classroom setting, it is essential that a teacher is able to assess the knowledge level of each student in order to appropriately design language activities that match respectively so that the students can feel confident and competent in their progress.Good teachers are also aware of cultural backgrounds and ages of their students, as that will often influence their learning style. For example, adults may have more reservations about asking questions in class, while younger students can display more confidence in this area.
