The Unit 14 reviews the usage of coursebooks and lesson materials. Some teachers prefer using course books because they usually provide a tried, tested and carefully graded syllabus. Others are likely to use extra materials to replace or supplement a coursebook and reinforce understanding. These materials are either authentic (magazines, newspapers, songs, films) or created (role-play cards, flashcards, picture stories, crosswords). Samples of such created materials are provided.
There are advantages and disadvantages of using each of these materials, so an ESL teacher in order to be effective in the class should consider using different kinds of materials according to the specific needs and interests of the class members.
