This unit reviewed the different ways students can be evaluated. Before beginning a class, it makes sense that a student would take a placement exam to determine what course would be most appropriate to the individual's skill level. After selecting the course, a diagnostic test can be used by the teacher to gauge where a language learner is within a level; their strengths and weaknesses. Progress exams can be using over the course of a term to determine how a student is doing with the class and to identify areas where they are experiencing both success and challenge. These tests provide important information for both the student and teacher. Since students are often anxious about how they are doing in a class, this feedback can be an important tool for either reinforcement or correction. Practice tests are often used to help students get comfortable with the format and content of a test prior to taking an external exam. The unit also reviewed the different types of external exams and their target demographic/uses.
