This unit focused on teaching receptive skills - reading and listening. It advises the student to focus on integrating a variety of skills into the lesson, learning and focusing on the interests of students, as well as carefully choosing texts so as to not discourage students. One of the most helpful parts of the unit was the advice regarding teaching vocabulary. As a language student, I would love to know all the vocabulary before reading a text, and I am sure my students will feel the same. However, the unit argues that it is better for the students to not know all the words but to discover some of them on their own. This skill will be essential them to feeling comfortable reading and listening in English and therefore the teacher must be cognizant to allow students to build this skill set.
