In this unit I learned bout teaching productive skills, with the two productive skills being speaking and writing. Students can be reluctant to speak about of lack of confidence or the fear of making a mistake and I've learned that with speaking it is important to get students engaged interested in the lesson so that they actively participate by speaking in class. Role play and group/paired activities help encourage speaking. Once students students have grasped the vocabulary during accuracy activities (such as drilling), they should then do some activities that promote fluency, like having a debate or discussion with other students. When learning how to write correctly, it is important to know the students' background, such as their language level and how their native written language is formed. If the native written language is fundamentally different than the English alphabet, then that poses several different challenges with writing. Also, English itself has words that sound phonetically the same, but are spelled differently, and also spelled the same but pronounced differently. I have also learned that games are an integral part of teaching productive language skills, and should be used. They also make learning more fun which will encourage students to actively participate more.
