Compared to the present tense, the past tense is very simple. The usages for the simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous tenses are all very simple and easy to comprehend. This is of course versus the present tense where the usages tend to overlap which makes it harder to differentiate. When the two tenses overlap themselves, we can see some errors being made. For example, while the past simple is just as its name suggests, I can see how it could possible get confused with the present perfect. While a main usage for both is to discuss an action that has finished in the past, they are both talking about the action in nuanced ways. The present perfect is much more general when talking about when the action had taken place, whereas the past simple tends to be more specific. If a mistake is made while using the two, a native speaker will understand what is trying to be said and some might not even notice something is off.
