This unit focuses on creating a lesson plan for the day and describes multiple methods in which to provide instruction, such as 'Task-Based Learning' which is to provide a task for students to perform using only English language, and 'Presentation, Practice and Production (PPP)' which is to give context and then setting up a demonstration of a language concept. In regards to this course, the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) method is the central focus. The format is the "Straight-Arrow" which will start with engagement, following with study, and ending with activation. First, you Engage students by showing pictures of different objects/things that share a common theme and ask students to answer questions regarding that topic. It is important to include everyone in the class and providing feedback is not necessary. The main focus is to motivate students in to participating in the lesson. Second is Study where students will focus in the core concepts of the lesson by completing worksheets with little or no interference from the teacher. Feedback is then given to students, with emphasis placed on a student who made an error to correct themselves, followed by fellow students offering correction. Finally is the activation stage, where a teacher can put students into groups or pairs and have them role play scenarios or play games using the central concepts of the lesson. Very little input from the teacher is recommended and feedback can be provided at the end of the task. Also, how and when to correction a students mistakes or errors is discussed in this unit as well as emphasizing flexibility of developing a lesson plan based on the language level of the class.
