This unit gave many useful ideas for structuring a lesson based on new vocabulary, language functions and grammatical structures. I thought back to my Thai language lessons, and the way use of realia, photos and role play were particularly helpful for me. Using a variety of teaching methods will help to keep the students interested. Students will have different ways they learn best (visual, written, acting etc) so using the ESA pattern for a class can give all students the best opportunity to learn.
I also learnt about what aspects of the new materials students need to know for full understanding. For example, when learning new vocabulary, students will need to know correct pronunciation, spelling, how and when to use it, and what it means. When learning functions students will need to know how and when to use them, and what the variations are according to the situation (casual, formal, professional.) When students are learning new grammar, they will need to know how and when to use it, different forms and tenses, the meaning, as well as any differences between when it's spoken or written.
