I learned how to differentiate between the four different types of present tense. The examples given were helpful for me to get a grasp of their differences and uses. Present simple is used for routines, habits, facts that are true at this moment. Present continuous is used for an action or a state that is happening now and ongoing, or situations which are changing, for example the weather. Present perfect relates the past to the present, for example an action that has or hasn't been completed, life experiences and unfinished actions, eg. I have lived here since January. Present perfect continuous also relates the past to the present, but the focus is on the action itself. It describes an action that has been happening for sometime, or is happening now and will keep going into the future or both.
