The English learners can be divided into various categories depending on their level of English, age and specific interests / professions. Among beginners there are true beginners (with no language knowledge), false beginners (those who have some knowledge of the language, but haven't used it), young learners, and adult learners. With young learners it's important to keep the lessons simple, speak clearly, use a lot of visual and interactive aids, vary the activities to prevent the kids from getting bored, and be fair. When teaching specialized groups, like Business English, it's important to be familiar with the environment, and know what the students expect from the class.
Monolingual learners consist of students who speak the same native language, and multilingual learners speak different native languages. Monolingual learners have the same difficulties learning English, and it may be easier to teach, accounting for those difficulties. Multilingual learners will have different issues when learning a new language, but the fact that they don't speak a common language will force them to use English more frequently.
