The Country

There are countrywide openings for teaching English in Greece, and an assortment of private language schools to cater to that demand. A vast majority of teachers will find themselves working for one of these language schools.

Teaching is mostly geared towards younger learners, but there are teaching possibilities in all areas. The salaries in Greece may appear to be low, but in relation to the cost of living, they are more than sufficient. A university degree is important and having this, along with a TEFL certificate and an EU passport, you should have no problem finding work. Other nationalities may encounter more problems due to EU regulations.

Before coming to Greece, you should do some research, and perhaps even try to secure a job. All language schools are regulated and organized through a central agency of school owners called PALSO. Contact PALSO to find which schools are in need of English teachers, they will even take your resume and send it on to interested schools. TEFL jobs are widely advertised in newspapers and on the Internet, most often from August to October. As well as applying ahead of time, you can also go door-to-door with your CV, again in the August to October period.

Once in Greece, you will need a teaching permit, residence permit, and work permit. These are all given out gradually and the school you will be working for must do part of the application process for you. Pay and conditions offered by language schools will vary, so it is smart to check these out before accepting a contract. Private English lessons are also prevalent in Greece. The University of Cambridge ESOL exam system seems to be the most widely known and respected in Greece and many people who want to be taught privately are preparing to sit a Cambridge exam or some other type of test. Salaries are quite low in Greece, but you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful, welcoming country.
