There are two different types of groups the instructor may work with. New groups are students who have come together who do not know each other. An existing group, are students who already know each other- most likely from previous classes together. Good rapport-building activities include surveys, tell us, a needs analysis (like on a note card), and pass the ball game. Some good warmers to encourage interaction and speaking and/or vocabulary building are hangman, memory, drawing, or tongue twisters. I personally think learning new idioms are fun too. One of the challenges a teacher may face are working with different levels of language learners. The teacher must encourage weaker students to learn in ways as that are not intimidating while ensuring more advanced students do not get bored. Pairing the two together can be good practice for both.
