This unit delves deeper into assessing the needs of your class and tailoring your course to those needs. Every class is different and it is important to respond to those specific needs, strengths, and weaknesses in order to make you instruction relevant and effective. Children and beginner learners need a more hands on and low level approach. It is always best to give instruction in a lower level of English than necessary in order to ensure understanding. Children also need more varied activities to hold their attention. As they gain confidence, you can introduce them to more complex activities or ones that allow them to speak more freely. Adult learners tend to be more highly motivated, but learn more slowly. Adults also often have a specific motivation, such as business (work) or travel. Based on these motivations, you can tailor your course to better serve them while still teaching the necessary grammar base.
